Lawson wasnât particularly talented. Well, he was good at evading the law, tricking women into putting up with him and lastly, ruining my day. He showed up that night on my doorstep, bloody and bruised.
âDo I want to know?â I asked him. It was rhetorical. I knew.
âI fucking told you, man. I told you what the fuck would happen.â
I got him into the house and ordered him to get into the shower so heâd stop bleeding on everything. It was gross. There was blood pooled at the front door and a droplet trail up to the bathroom. Fuck. Hanley and Martin werenât playing. I picked up my phone and texted Martin that I wanted to see him the next day. This was getting out of hand.
Lawson was fine-ish, overall. The blood was from his nose which was well and truly broken, but the rest of him wasnât irreparably damaged. Heâd be fine. I handed him a beer and joined him in the living room where he stretched out on my couch.
âSorry about showing up like this,â he said.
âYouâre not sorry,â I scoffed.
âYouâre right, but shit, itâs still polite to apologize.â I looked at him.
âYou? Polite? Since when did you have any manners?â
âThe guys must have beaten some into me tonight,â he said, laughing. âYou staying in for the evening?â
âYeah.â
âIs Thomas in town?â
âNope.â
âDo you know where he is?â
I shrugged. âNot here.â
His eyes widened.
âAnd you arenât at Natashaâs? Is she home?â
âDonât know. I broke it off with her today.â
âI know, I was there, but you donât just ditch a piece of ass like Natasha Nadal. She really let you go?â
I shrugged. I had been avoiding her calls, but she hadnât shown up tonight, so she likely had gotten the message.
âI told you. Iâm done with her.â
âDude, if you donât go to her house and fuck her, I will.â
I shrugged.
âBe my guest.â
Lawson gawked at me.
âFuck. I never thought Iâd see the day you stiffed Natasha Nadal. Whatâs gotten into you?â
âNothing. I just donât want to see her anymore. Too much drama.â
âUh-huh. Itâs Blondie from the bar the other night, isnât it?â
I swallowed and felt my abdomen tighten.
âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
âOh, you donât remember, huh? I guess that means you donât care if I go after her.â
I glanced at him.
âKnock yourself out.â Shit. My voice definitely betrayed me on that one.
âYou sure you donât remember her? She was sexy. Green eyes. Long blond hair. Short little dress. Nice tits.â
I breathed deeply calling on the strength of the Lord to stop me from knocking Lawsonâs teeth out.
âLips that would wrap nice and tight around aââ
âShut up Lawson,â I snapped. âYou arenât hurt bad enough to need a hospital but if you want to end up in one keep talking.â
âOkay, okay,â he said holding up a hand. âItâs okay that you like her, yâknow. Nothing to be ashamed of.â
âI donât like her,â I sighed, taking a swig of my beer.
âSure you donât. Itâs fine if you do. Sheâs hot. Iâm just surprised is all.
